Owens Scores Career-Best Finish at Rockingham
Driver of ElectrifyingCareers.com Car Caps Solid Weekend With 12th Place Finish
Rockingham, NC (April 19, 2009) – Rockingham Speedway has a reputation for punishing young drivers, however Alli Owens was an exception to the rule in this weekend's Carolina 200. The Daytona Beach, Fl native was a picture of consistency at the famed, high-banked, one-mile oval. In only her second race at 'the Rock,' Owens drove the ElectrifyingCareers.com Toyota to a career-best 12th place finish among a field of veteran drivers.
Owens took the green flag from the 17th position. She picked up three spots before the team made its first pit stop on lap 54. The ElectrifyingCareers.com car was "tight in, loose off," so crew chief Jerry Pitts called for track bar and air pressure adjustments, along with four fresh tires and fuel. The pit crew made quick work of the service and picked up four positions for Owens, putting her in 10th place for the restart.
The race went back to green on lap 69. Owens battled a car that was "loose, loose, loose" through the turns and fell to 20th place before the team could make adjustments to the No. 19 machine. The crew got its opportunity to improve the handling on lap 105, when the caution flag waved and allowed Owens to bring her car into the pits for adjustments. The team changed the tires, topped off the fuel cell and made another round of track bar and air pressure adjustments. Once again, the crew performed a lightning fast pit stop and put Owens in 14th place for the ensuing green flag run.
On lap 112, the green flag waved for the final time. With coaching from her spotter, Eddie D'Hondt, Owens experimented with her line around the track throughout the remaining 88 laps. The duo produced Owens' fastest laps of the event, as she consistently ran lap times on pace with the top-five cars. Owens' quick tempo allowed her to pick up two positions to finish the Carolina 200 in 12th place.
"The ElectrifyingCareers.com car was really good today," said Owens. "We went a little too far on our first adjustment and our car was too loose on the next run. We lost a little ground because of that, but everything came together for our last run. The (No.) 19 team did a great job today and ended the day with a solid finish.
"I learned a lot today. I learned how to handle the track and how to handle the car. We ran lap times at the end of the race that would have been good enough for a top-five finish. I know when we go back to Rockingham in October, we'll be able to pick up where we left off." |
